To buy a luxury watch for your wife, pay attention to the jewelry and metals she already wears, choose a size that suits her wrist and taste, decide whether she wants a watch that reads as jewelry or as a watch, and buy from a seller who authenticates every piece and offers returns if the fit is not right. Pre-owned opens up classic Cartier, Rolex, OMEGA, and Tudor models at better prices, with an expert to guide you.
Watches for women have changed. Many women now wear 36mm or larger watches that were once marketed to men, while others love a small, elegant piece. The right answer depends entirely on her, which is why the homework matters.
Step 1: Look at what she already wears
- Metal. Does she wear yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, or silver-toned jewelry? Match it. Two-tone watches bridge both.
- Scale. Delicate chains and small earrings suggest a smaller, slimmer watch. Bolder jewelry suggests she will be comfortable with more presence.
- Shape. Does she gravitate to geometric or soft shapes? Cartier’s Tank is rectangular, the Santos is square, and the Ballon Bleu is round, as our Cartier guide explains.
- Her current watch, if any. Note its size and whether she wears it daily or only on occasions.
Step 2: Jewelry watch or watch watch?
Some women want a watch that feels like fine jewelry: a Cartier Tank or Ballon Bleu, a Rolex Datejust with a diamond dial, or a small gold piece. Others want a real watch they can wear everywhere, including a Rolex Oyster Perpetual or Explorer, an OMEGA Seamaster or Aqua Terra, or a Tudor Black Bay in a smaller size. Rolex describes the Oyster Perpetual as the gateway to the brand and offers it in a wide variety of sizes, per Rolex, and the Datejust, introduced in 1945, is available across multiple sizes, according to Rolex.
The Tudor Black Bay 36 pictured above is a good example of the middle ground: a 36mm steel sports watch with diamond hour markers that works with jeans and with a dress.
Step 3: Choose the size
Women’s wrists commonly fall below 16cm (about 6.3 inches). Longines suggests case diameters of roughly 32 to 36mm for wrists under 16cm, and 36 to 42mm for wrists around 16 to 17.8cm, according to its sizing guide. Many women happily wear 36mm; some prefer 28 to 31mm; others wear 39 to 41mm as a statement. Square and rectangular watches wear larger than their stated width, which is why a Cartier Santos Medium at 35.1mm feels substantial, per Bob’s Watches.
If you can, borrow one of her bracelets or measure a watch she owns. Our watch size guide explains lug-to-lug length and thickness, and if you share a wrist measurement, ask us to size the bracelet before shipping.
Step 4: Dial, bracelet, and strap
- Dial color. White, silver, and mother-of-pearl are the most versatile. Blue and green are popular and a little more personal. Diamond markers add sparkle without turning the watch into jewelry.
- Bracelet vs. strap. A steel or two-tone bracelet is the most wearable every day. Leather straps are dressier and easy to swap for a new look later.
- Clasp. Make sure the bracelet can be sized to her wrist, and ask us to size it before shipping.
Step 5: Buy pre-owned from a specialist
Pre-owned gives you access to discontinued dial colors and configurations, often at a meaningful saving, and a specialist has already authenticated and inspected the watch. Every photo on our site is of the actual watch for sale, with condition and accessories clearly described. If you want a specific model we do not have, our sourcing service will look for it. Installment options through Shop Pay may be available at checkout on eligible purchases.
Protect yourself with the seller’s policies: our 12-month limited service warranty on eligible watches, a return window of 5 days from delivery for unworn watches in original condition, and free, fully insured domestic shipping with signature confirmation.

Questions we hear from husbands and partners
Should I buy a “ladies’” watch or a smaller men’s watch?
Ignore the label and buy for her wrist and taste. Many of the most popular women’s watches today are 36mm steel models from Rolex and Tudor.
Is Cartier a good gift watch?
Yes. Cartier is one of the most requested gift brands we see, especially the Tank, Santos, and Ballon Bleu. Our Cartier comparison helps you choose.
What if the bracelet does not fit?
Share her wrist measurement and ask us to size the bracelet before shipping. All available links come with the watch, so adjusting it later is a quick fix.
What if she wants a different watch?
Keep it unworn with its packaging until she has seen it, and use the return window. We also help clients exchange or trade toward a different piece.
