From our pre-owned inventory: IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph “Top Gun” IW388001, a 46mm ceramic chronograph serviced by IWC in August 2023.
Choose an IWC Pilot’s Watch if you want a legible, aviation-inspired tool watch, from simple three-hand models to the Top Gun chronographs. Choose the Portugieser if you want IWC’s most elegant design, with a large, clean dial and classic proportions. Choose the Ingenieur if you want a modern integrated-bracelet sports watch with an anti-magnetic, engineering-led story.
All three are excellent, and all three wear very differently. Here is how I help buyers decide.
Pilot’s Watches: the instrument
IWC’s aviation history runs deep. The Big Pilot’s Watch calibre 52 T.S.C. was developed in 1940 and measured 55mm across, according to IWC’s press archive. IWC also developed the Navigator’s Wristwatch Mark 11 at the request of the Royal Air Force, with a soft-iron inner cage to protect the movement from magnetic fields. IWC says the Mark 11 was manufactured from 1948 and stayed in service until 1981.
Today, the Pilot’s Watch family includes three-hand Mark models, the Big Pilot, chronographs, and the Top Gun line, which often uses ceramic and other high-tech materials. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 uses the in-house calibre 69385 with a 46-hour power reserve and a column wheel, according to IWC.
- Best for: buyers who want a highly legible, durable everyday watch with military-aviation roots.
- From our inventory: the Pilot Chronograph Top Gun IW388001, a 46mm ceramic chronograph on a textile strap.
Portugieser: the elegant classic
The Portugieser story began in the late 1930s, when a Lisbon wholesaler approached IWC about a men’s wristwatch with the precision of a marine chronometer. IWC’s records show the first Reference 325 was delivered in February 1939, and production was small, according to IWC’s history of the reference.
The best-known modern model is the Portugieser Chronograph IW371605, a 41mm steel watch, 13mm thick, with calibre 69355, a 46-hour power reserve, and 3 bar of water resistance, per IWC’s specifications. Its vertically aligned subdials and slim bezel make it one of the most recognizable dress chronographs.
- Best for: buyers who want a sophisticated watch for business and formal wear.
- Consider: the low water-resistance rating on many Portugieser models means it is not a swimming watch.
Ingenieur: the engineer’s sports watch
IWC introduced the Ingenieur in 1955 as an anti-magnetic watch for engineers and technicians. Gérald Genta’s Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832, followed in 1976. In 2023, IWC launched the Ingenieur Automatic 40, inspired by Genta’s design, with in-house calibre 32111, a 120-hour power reserve, a soft-iron inner case for magnetic protection, and 10 bar of water resistance, according to IWC.
- Best for: buyers who like integrated-bracelet sports watches but want an alternative to the Royal Oak, Nautilus, or Overseas. Our luxury sports watch guide compares those models.
- Consider: the 2023 design is different from earlier Ingenieur generations, so compare references carefully.
Side by side
- Style: Pilot is utilitarian and legible; Portugieser is elegant and classic; Ingenieur is sporty and architectural.
- Typical strap: Pilot often uses leather or textile; Portugieser usually leather; Ingenieur an integrated steel bracelet.
- Best setting: Pilot for everyday and casual; Portugieser for business and formal; Ingenieur for everyday luxury.
- Water resistance: varies by model. The current Ingenieur 40 is rated to 10 bar, while the Portugieser Chronograph is rated to 3 bar.
Buying pre-owned IWC
- Pre-owned value is strong. Many IWC models trade below retail, especially chronographs and the larger Pilot models.
- Service history matters. A documented IWC service, like the August 2023 service on our Top Gun, adds confidence.
- Check size and wearability. Big Pilot and some Top Gun models are large. Our watch size guide can help.
- Know the movement. IWC uses both in-house and partner-based calibres. Confirm the calibre for the exact reference.
IWC questions
Which IWC is the best everyday watch?
For most buyers, a Pilot’s Watch or the Ingenieur 40. The Portugieser is beautiful, but its lower water resistance and dressier style make it better for the office.
Is the Portugieser a dress watch?
It is one of the most popular dress-leaning chronographs, though many owners wear it daily.
What does the soft-iron inner case do?
It shields the movement from magnetic fields, which can affect timekeeping.
